Dec 1st 07 meet

December 12th, 2007 by hapkendo

Last meet of the year…. here are the results:

squat - 705 (not what i wanted but sometimes things don’t go the way you want

bench - 468

deadlift - 644

there have only been 2 meets in this federation, so I’m still the world record holder in the squat and deadlift for the 242lb weight class.  I know that this won’t last too long, but i’ll enjoy it while i still have it.

Finally…. got my name on a paper

In the upcoming issue of Nature Biotech (July 1st issue)

here’s the abstract

An Improved Zinc Finger Nuclease Architecture for
Highly Specific Genome Editing

Zinc finger nuclease (ZFN) driven genome editing is a powerful tool of broad utility to medical, agricultural and industrial biotechnology. This method yields very high gene modification efficiencies (>10%) by introducing a recombinogenic double strand break into the targeted gene. The desired cleavage event is induced using two custom-designed ZFNs that heterodimerize upon binding DNA to form a catalytically active nuclease complex. Using the current ZFN architecture, however, cleavage-competent homodimers may also form that can limit safety or efficacy via off-target cleavage. Here we develop an improved ZFN architecture that eliminates this problem. Using structure-based design and screening, we engineer two ZFNs with variant dimer interfaces that efficiently cleave DNA only when paired as a heterodimer. These ZFNs induce gene modification as efficiently as the parental architecture, but with at least a 40-fold reduction in homodimer activity when tested at an endogenous locus and with much lower levels of genome-wide cleavage. This new architecture provides a general means for improving the specificity of ZFNs as gene modification reagents.

guess i’ve kinda neglected my friendster as myspace has taken more of my interest.

let’s see, i’m about to get published in Nature Biotechnology.

going to lift in another powerlifting meet and try to best my most recent numbers of 704 squat 464 bench and 622 deadlift.

and lastly, trying to get into pharmacy school.

hopefully i’ll be married sometime during pharmacy school if, when i get in.

Another Powerlifting Meet

November 12th, 2005 by hapkendo

Ok… just finished another powerlifting meet.

Didn’t quite get what I wanted but I did ok nonetheless.

My final results are as follows:

Squat = 584

Bench = 380

Deadlift = 518

Weighed in at 218.5 lbs so I just made it in the 220lb weight class.

Now, back to training for the next meet.

NY City!!!!

August 29th, 2005 by hapkendo

Went to NY this past weekend (Aug 26-28) for a wedding and to see my main squeeze.

It was awesome.  The best thing about being in NY, was the weather.  It probably barely topped 80.  I was told by a friend how lucky we were that the weather wasn’t 90-100 like it normally was.  Ha!  I brought the SF weather with me!

The wedding was great, the people were fun, free food and alcohol, what more could you ask for?  And to top it all off, we ate at Carnegie’s deli.  If you haven’t been there, then I suggest you go the next time you’re in NY.  The pastrami on rye or corned beef on rye is fantastic.  The strawberry cheesecake is phenomenal.  The food is a bit pricey but well worth it.

Damn, vacations are always too short.  I need to win the lottery or finish writing my book so I can make enough money to retire and go to NY at least twice a month.

Vegas Meet is over

April 18th, 2005 by hapkendo

The Vegas powerlifting meet was last weekend.   I’ve had a week to recover, so here are the results:

2nd place in men’s 220lb weight class.

574lb squat

352lb bench

484lb deadlift

After the meet, much consumption of buffet food occurred.  No gambling, just eating.  I went from weighing 216lbs friday morning to 230lbs by sunday night.  Bodyweight manipulation is fun!

Powerlifting Meet April 9th

April 4th, 2005 by hapkendo

Vegas is the place to be…. food, drinking, gambling, and yes, powerlifting.

This will be close to the 1 year anniversary of my first competition.  Hoping to really destroy my previous lift attempts.
